Energy Efficiency Is The Only Way To Reduce Fuel Bills

With an average energy bill set to climb to 1406 in 2009 (from 676 in 2005), the Government has given a commitment to help consumers improve household energy efficiency and permanently bring down energy bills.

As the nation waits for confirmation of where Government support will be given, many organisations are offering advice and guidance into where and how families can make changes that will cut their household energy costs.

Figures from the Energy Savings Trust suggest that if everyone undertook a number of simple measures including: Fitting energy saving light bulbs, double glazed windows, installing a condensing boiler, cavity wall and loft insulation and jackets for hot water tanks, UK households could reduce energy bills by over 270 a year and save over 1.9bn in fuel costs*.

Paul Kellett, Technical Director at Anglian Home Improvements, an Energy Savings Trust recommended supplier said: It is increasingly becoming apparent that current fuel price increases are set to have dramatic effects on many peoples household bills.

But making energy efficient changes, ahead of the winter months, could lead to savings of thousands of pound on future fuel bills – as well as adding to a houses value. If people are considering making improvements we would urge them to look at the most energy efficient options.

Installing double glazing for example, cuts heat lost through windows by half. At Anglian we fit B-rated energy saving double glazing as standard, which offers potential savings of over 110 per year per household.

Further estimations on savings to be gained from implementing energy efficiency measures in the home include*:
Around a third of all the heat lost in an un-insulated home is lost through the walls. Fitting cavity wall insulation could save up to 120 on an annual fuel bill
Insulating an uninsulated loft can save around 155 a year If everyone in the UK topped up their loft insulation to 270mm, around 560m would be saved each year. That’s enough money to pay the annual fuel bills of around 530,000 families.
An ultra efficient condensing boiler will be 20% more efficient and could save up to 130 on heating bills.
Fitting an insulating jacket to the hot water cylinder could save around 30 per year
Setting hot water cylinder thermostats to 60C/140F could save up to 10 over the year
Using low energy light bulbs to save 10 on electricity bills each year.
By installing draught proofing you could save around 25 a year on your heating bills

Financial help may be available if you’re planning to make energy saving improvements to your home

Victorian Interior Design Evokes A Golden Era

Victorian interior design is a great option if you want a cozy feel in your home. Here are some tips to help you get that old-time feeling in your living space

Victorian interior designs are especially effective in older farm houses. The exterior of the house features colorful paints with contrasting trim and lots of “gingerbread” trim. Interior designs feature lots of lace, ruffles and filigree trims. In the Victorian era, people enjoyed overstuffed furniture and plush surroundings.

Victorian design is named for England’s Queen Victoria, who reigned through most of the 19th century, an era in which England prospered thanks to the Industrial Revolution. Thanks to the growth of technology and factories, people were finally able to afford life’s little luxuries.

While today, many people think of Victorian design as overly fussy, you can still enjoy Victorian elements in your home. For example, try installing wallpaper in light pastel colors with a floral design. You might want to pull up your wall-to-wall carpeting and refinish your hard wood floors. To add warmth, add a colorful Victorian throw rug or big ruffled curtains.

One easy way to add Victorian touches is to use paper items. Find some Victorian style valentines or silhouettes and frame them in a round, wooden frame. Get a Victorian style photo album to display pictures of your loved ones.

The Victorian era emphasized wood, especially darker finishes. Think about adding some wood accessories, especially those with scrollwork or other carvings. Victorian furniture has extra touches, such as claw feet, carved embellishments or red velvet upholstery. Just one or two pieces can give your home a Victorian look without going overboard.

Some people think Victorian design looks too cluttered and frilly. You may prefer to use a country Victorian theme instead. Combine the Victorian frills with plain country-style pieces for a pleasing, comfortable that even the most macho guys will like.

Overall, Victorian design should convey a peaceful feeling. Think of your grandmother’s house, with its white lace doilies and flowers everywhere. If you have some of her pieces, you can easily incorporate them into your home design. If you don’t, you can easily get authentic Victorian items from antique shops and rummage sales. If they have scratches, it’s no problem, small blemishes add authenticity and charm. You are not creating a museum, you are designing your home.

These are just a few ideas for you. You can find plenty more in the many home design magazines, many specifically for older homes. Also try looking at home restoration and history websites for other suggestions.

Victorian design allows you to relive the good old days but still keep modern conveniences. Try adding a small Victorian touch to your home today and see how pleasant it is to remember days gone by.

Green Deal – The Biggest Energy Efficiency Drive In The Uk

The Green Deal UK aims to reduce CO2 emission and boost energy efficiency in the country. It has great potential to save large amount of money for householders and businesses, as well as to secure energy supplies for the future generation.

In December, 2010, the UK Government introduced the Energy Bill in the Parliament. The bill proposed ‘Green Deal’, that aims to revolutionise the energy efficiency in UK homes and businesses. The most ambitious energy efficiency drive in the UK to date, it enables private firms to offer green improvements to the residents and businesses at no upfront cost, and to recoup payments in instalments on the energy bill. The deal is an attempt by the UK Government to tackle the climate change and secure future energy supplies in the country.

The Green Deal is designed to encourage households and businesses in the UK to retrofit energy saving measures. The government has attempted to create a framework that allows selected private firms to provide energy saving measures to households and businesses without bringing additional costs to them. The policy makers consider it a long-term solution to energy related problems. It is expected to minimise the energy wastage, and help households and business-owners to save money when it comes to boost their energy efficiency. The Green Deal is the biggest ever shake-up in UK energy efficiency history.

Once it comes into force, the Green Deal will allow people to take out loans to improve the energy efficiency of their properties including insulation, heating and lighting. The loans which are to be attached to the property, will be paid back over a fixed period through the savings made on energy bills. As per the estimates, an average house will have 6000 of measures installed, that will be repaid in a time period of more than 25 years. The household will not be required to pay up-front installation cost. Since the repayment will be attached with the electricity meter, the scheme is open to all, without any inspection for credit history and employment status.

Under the Green Deal, people will be provided with financial support to improve the energy efficiency of their properties. Though the deal seems quite beneficial, government will have to take initiative to make it more effective. It’s needed to deliver the policies which encourage the public to take-up Green Deal. Additionally, the financial model must be attractive to the investors, i.e. the default risk should be minimum. In short, the government will have to establish a strong, recognisable Green Deal system that could create confidence and trust, both among potential consumers and service providers. However, the full detail could be available after the launch of Green Deal in 2012.

The Green Deal is open to all, homeowners, tenants, businessmen. If implemented properly, it will surely cut down the CO2 emission, and improve the energy efficiency in the country. If you’re also interested in this deal, and want to opt it, you can register your interest with a reputed company that provides this facility. Using Internet, you can find some reliable websites which help you apply for green deal. Considering your buying criteria, you can choose the best among them, and ensure a reduced energy bill and improved energy efficiency for your premise.

Double Glazing As An Energy Efficiency Measure

Double glazing involves adding a second pane of glass to the existing one while leaving a space in between. This space traps air that can act as an excellent insulator against noise and heat loss. Many people spend a lot of money buying home heaters to keep the house warm during the cold days. Windows that are single glazed usually loose up to 20 percent of heat. With double glazing however, you can save a lot of utility costs since the glazed windows and doors will conserve the heat energy in the house. During the hot days, the glazed windows keep the heat out thereby maintaining a cool atmosphere inside the house.

When looking for double glazing material that will help you conserve as much heat as possible, it is important to consider the efficiency of that material. UPVC is the most popular of the double glazing materials; it comes in a wide range of colors, sizes and styles. It is up to you to choose which of these fit into the design of your home perfectly. UPVC is also a suitable option for those operating on a tight budget because of its cost effectiveness. The material is also used when you want to make minor improvement to your home heat conservation system.

Other materials that can be used include hard wood and aluminum. Aluminum is quite durable as well as very strong. All these materials are suitable for double glazing since they do not react to adverse weather conditions, unlike wood. They are also not only energy conservatives, they also act as deterrent to would be burglars. Contrast to popular belief, double glazing does not have to spoil how your house looks; you can pick colors and styles that complement the general design of your house.

For high level of energy conservation, you can install secondary double glazing. This involves installing a second door or window on the interior side of the old one. You can save up to 135 pounds on your heating bills every year if you install double glazing in your house. You also save around 720 kilograms of carbon dioxide in the same time period.

If you are not sure about the best way to install energy saving double glazing, seek help from an energy efficiency advice center near you. Double glazing does not harm the environment in any way. On the contrary, you would be conserving nature if you adopted this natural way of conserving energy. It has been proven beyond doubt that double glazing can help you save over 50 percent of heat that would otherwise be lost if your windows were not glazed. Save energy and money by double glazing your windows and doors.

Insights Into Interior Design Designing In Style. Part I Foundations

Global Interior Design Consultancy Company in London, UK for interior design services.
Interior design has always been impacted by fashion trends – both historically and in the modern day. In this article series, “Designing in Style,” I explore the meaning of style for interior designers. I draw on my experience working alongside many of London’s best-known interior design teams. This first article in my series outlines some of the basic concepts.

One of the first things to note is that we change our interiors much less frequently than we change our clothing. As a result, it is important for the professional interior designer to not design too “fashionable” a room for fear that it might seem completely outdated next year. Certainly it is possible to keep up with furniture fashions – many of which can be seen in London’s monthly interior design magazines – but the professional interior designer will generally prefer to focus on furniture fashions that can be easily changed. Examples include cushions, table decorations, rugs and bed linens.

London Interior Design trends can be very changeable. For example, in recent decades London saw a movement back towards the traditional. The Georgian-style Adam fireplace has seen a major revival, as have other old-fashioned features. Mouldings are very much in style today, and interior designers will commonly include them – whether in plaster or in wood.

Interestingly, the return of the dado rail (even in some of the smaller London residences) has also seen a re-envisioning of the two-tone wall colour scheme. In keeping with tradition, London interior design professionals will often choose a heavier, darker colour below the dado rail and a lighter colour above.

Fabric coordination is very much in vogue. With the increased availability of bespoke fabric centres in and around London, interior designers will often nowadays choose fabrics that are manufactured to match papers, borders, carpets, ceramics and even porcelain.

Finally, style should always be understood in the context of the available interior design space. No two rooms are identical, and every room has both strong points and weak points. The most experienced interior designers will choose styles that can showcase a room’s strengths while hiding its weaknesses. Examples of weaknesses in a room might include some structural re-engineering made by a previous owner, or perhaps an awkward architectural design fault that cannot be remedied today.

In the next article in this series on how interior designers “design in style,” I will introduce you to two of London’s most timeless design styles – Georg

Why Oak Is Made In The Crafting Of Oak Furniture

Why oak is made in the crafting of Oak furniture is simple enough to answer once one gets a look at how beautiful this wood can be once it has been cut, shaped in finished. Oak and oak furniture seem to be a match that was preordained long ago. In fact, some of the best looking household furniture known in the world comes from this extremely durable and very versatile timber.

Oak for the most part comes from the tree, though there are oak shrubs in nature. There are also over 400 species of oak existing currently. It is known for its thickness and density, and is also appreciated for the strength and hardness of its timber. Because of the high tannin content within it, it is also very resistant against fungus and insect infestations. Furniture made from it can survive for centuries.

The granular markings within oak are also appreciated by carpenters and woodworkers to no end. Pretty much since the Middle Ages, carpenters worked to produce wide planks sawn in quarter-angles that were then made to be added to the interiors as wooden paneling. There are notable examples of this paneling scattered throughout Europe, including in the British House of Commons in London.

When it comes to the production of fine furniture, oak is one of the prime timbers used to manufacture it. One can walk through any number of historic and ancient European castles and palaces and see an example of oaken furniture in bedrooms, antechambers and other areas of the household. Some of these examples are nearly 10 centuries old and still look very nice, which is a testament to the oak itself.

As if anyone needed more convincing about the sterling qualities of this fine wood, it is helpful to remember that just about every wooden sailing ship up through the 19th century was constructed of this extremely durable and very sturdy material. Practically the whole British Royal Navy was built of Oak at one point. Additionally, almost every timber-framed building in Europe was constructed of oak.

Today, as a prime material for the making of furniture, this versatile wood is seen in many pieces of furniture along with a number of sterling examples of wooden flooring and most any barrel made for the storage and fermentation of certain wines and also some of the best scotch and bourbon in the world. These two liquors are made primarily from the American or European oak, which are the finest.

As far as furniture itself goes, one can see nice examples of this wood in more than a few higher-priced bedroom suites for sale today. The Amish craftsmen and woodworkers in Ohio and Pennsylvania specialize in taking this wood and creating extremely beautiful pieces of bedroom furniture from it. This includes classic headboards and foot boards along with more than a few chests and dressers.

Why oak is made in the crafting of oak furniture, then, becomes evident whenever one stops to take a look at the quality of the furniture that is produced from it. It has had a place in the making of such furniture in North America and Europe for hundreds of years, and there are examples of this furniture spread throughout many notable buildings in Europe even today.

Laminate Flooring Perth 6000 Experts

Laminate flooring is a fused together multi-layer synthetic flooring product using a lamination process (hence the name). Laminate flooring simulates wood and even stone in some cases, with a photographic finish layer under a clear protective layer. The inner core layer is composed of melamine resin and fiber board materials.
It has the advantages that it is durable, as compared with carpet, and attractive, at a lower cost as compared to natural floor materials.
Installation
Laminate floors are reasonably for the do-it-yourself homeowner to install. For best results and warranty may be preferred to use a professional installer.
Laminate flooring are packaged as a number of tongue and groove planks – these can be clicked into one another. Installed laminate floors typically “float” over the sub-floor on top of a foam/film underlayment, which provides moisture and sound-reducing properties. A small (1-10mm) gap is required between the flooring and any immovable object such as walls, this allows the flooring to expand without being obstructed.
Skirting boards provide a tidy finish to the installation of the laminate.
It is important to keep laminate clean, as dust, dirt and sand particles may scratch the decorative surface over time in high-traffic areas. It is also important to keep laminate relatively dry, since sitting water/moisture can cause the planks to swell, warp, etc, though some brands are equipped with water-resistant coatings. Water spills aren’t a problem if they’re wiped up quickly, and not allowed to sit for a prolonged period of time.
Adhesive felt pads are often placed on the feet of furniture on laminate floors to prevent scratching.
